Is it time to redecorate your bedroom? Whether you’re planning an extensive overhaul or just freshening up the space a little, we’re pleased to bring you the latest bedroom design trends, to help you keep your finger on the pulse.

Colours

Pantone has named its Colour of the Year and for 2013 it is rich, sumptuous emerald. Indicative of luxury and timeless style, this deep colour will be great for a striking feature wall or, if you prefer a more understated use of colour, as subtle emerald highlights, such as dark green bedding, glass vases or an alarm clock. The ultimate neutral colour this year is grey: it complements bold emerald beautifully, but it will also go with any other main accent colour you choose.

Textures

Forget carpets, this year it’s all about hardwood floors and the darker they are, the better. Dark, glossy wood will really set off the dominant colour and give your room a truly cutting-edge feel. Of course, hard surfaces should not dominate in a bedroom. Add a thick rug for a little extra warmth, and soften the rest of the room with soft furnishings and layered bedding: luxurious fabrics like silks and velvets are perfect for throw pillows and bolster cushions.

Patterns

There are two big patterns in style at the moment - stripes and botanicals - and you can use them on anything from wallpaper to furnishings. Stripes will really create some drama and, if you want to give your bedroom an über-masculine feel, you could even go for animal patterns, such as zebra or tiger stripes. At the other end of the scale are botanicals - natural and feminine, but also equally striking, especially if you choose big, stylised patterns and bold colours.

Potted plants are a great way to add a touch of freshness and greenery to your bedroom, and they’ll be particularly pretty if they’re placed against a pale wall. Depending on the rest of the room, you could either choose heavy, dark curtains to match the room’s other indulgent colours, or lighter curtains if you’ve opted for a more neutral palette. Homemade accessories are also a big must this year, including repurposed furniture and chunky knitted cushion covers.

Furniture

With all these bold colours and simple patterns the last thing you want is clutter, so choose furniture that comes with extra hidden storage. This could involve simply putting drawers or boxes under your bed, or even investing in a new frame that comes with built-in storage space. As for bedroom furniture trends this year, think either more dark wood in a hue that contrasts with the floor, or go in entirely the other direction with clean, white furniture.

Lighting

Bedroom lighting should always be soft and subtle, and you can incorporate the easy elegance of this year’s style into your lighting with a modern chandelier. There are so many different styles available when it comes to these light fittings - choose from elaborate and feminine, rustic vintage, or bold, angular sculptural lighting. Whatever your taste, you can always find something to suit your style, and just a small change like this can make a huge difference to your bedroom.
