How to: tissue paper pom-poms
We've recently added some new designs to our tissue paper collection! As well as being ideal for wrapping gifts, tissue paper can also be used for a huge range of craft projects. We tasked Georgia Coote to come up with a fun DIY project, perfect for a rainy weekend.

These fun, frothy pom-poms are so easy to make and are the perfect way to add some extra oomph to your party decorations or equally lovely as an addition to your home decor. Create as many as you like and hang in a pretty cluster around the table for celebrations, or adorn hooks in children’s rooms for a fun focal point. Adjusting the length of the hanging loop will add some variety to your display.
You will need:
- Five sheets of Fairies in the Garden tissue paper
- Scissors
- An egg cup
- Pencil
- A needle and thread
Step one
Pile up the five sheets of tissue paper and then fold them in half width wise. Cut down the fold.
Step two
Take the stack of tissue paper and fold over around 3-4cm of one of the narrow ends. Using this first fold as a guide, accordion fold all the way to the end of the paper, creasing firmly as you go.
Step three
Take a piece of embroidery thread and wrap it around the middle of the tissue strip twice, knot and trim off the excess.
Step four
Draw a curve at each end of the tissue strip, using the egg cup as a guide.
Step five
With sharp scissors, cut out the curve.
Step six
Holding the middle of the tissue strip, fan out one side.
Step seven
Starting with one side of the fan, unfurl the layers - carefully but firmly separate each layer by pulling the tissue away from the centre.
Step eight
Repeat with the other side to create a ball shape.
Step nine
Thread some embroidery thread onto a needle and then thread under the knot in the middle of the pom pom and tie at the ends to create a loop to hang.
Step ten
Hang and enjoy! You could experiment with making all different sizes to make a fun eye-catching display. Use a variety of different designs to suit any occasion or room decor.
