How to: tissue paper pom-poms

We've recently added some new designs to our tissue paper collection! As well as being ideal for wrapping gifts, tissue paper can also be used for a huge range of craft projects. We tasked Georgia Coote to come up with a fun DIY project, perfect for a rainy weekend.

Tissue paper pom-pom

These fun, frothy pom-poms are so easy to make and are the perfect way to add some extra oomph to your party decorations or equally lovely as an addition to your home decor. Create as many as you like and hang in a pretty cluster around the table for celebrations, or adorn hooks in children’s rooms for a fun focal point. Adjusting the length of the hanging loop will add some variety to your display.

You will need:

Step one

Pile up the five sheets of tissue paper and then fold them in half width wise. Cut down the fold.

Step two

Take the stack of tissue paper and fold over around 3-4cm of one of the narrow ends. Using this first fold as a guide, accordion fold all the way to the end of the paper, creasing firmly as you go.

Step three

Take a piece of embroidery thread and wrap it around the middle of the tissue strip twice, knot and trim off the excess.

Step four

Draw a curve at each end of the tissue strip, using the egg cup as a guide.

Step five

With sharp scissors, cut out the curve.

Step six

Holding the middle of the tissue strip, fan out one side.

Step seven

Starting with one side of the fan, unfurl the layers - carefully but firmly separate each layer by pulling the tissue away from the centre.

Step eight

Repeat with the other side to create a ball shape.

Step nine

Thread some embroidery thread onto a needle and then thread under the knot in the middle of the pom pom and tie at the ends to create a loop to hang.

Step ten

Hang and enjoy! You could experiment with making all different sizes to make a fun eye-catching display. Use a variety of different designs to suit any occasion or room decor.
