In the movies: the greatest gifts for women

Need a gift for the woman you love? There are always chocolates and flowers, or you could go all out with a big romantic gesture! Here are some of our favourite grand gifts for women from the movies.

The film: Shakespeare in Love

The gift: Twelfth Night

This movie is a doomed love story within a doomed love story, as the Bard himself gets embroiled in a forbidden love affair whilst also preparing for the inaugural performance of Romeo and Juliet. The end for Will and his lady love isn't exactly happy - although certainly not as tragic as the ending for his characters - and in a final act of love he writes Twelfth Night for her. Something for all poetic lotharios to aim for?

The film: Titanic

The gift: Flight (sort of)

We all know that moment, when Jack takes Rose to the prow of the ship and shows her what it's like to fly. OK, they don't actually take off but it's the beauty of the gesture that really counts. Of course, he also gives her a naked drawing of herself, but this likely only works if the woman you're trying to impress has had to deal with a lifetime of Victorian-esque oppression.

The film: 10 Things I Hate About You

The gift: His public humiliation

After Bianca leans in for a kiss and gets the humiliating brush-off, the only way Patrick can make it up to her is by humiliating himself too. Cue Andy Williams' Can't Take My Eyes Off You blasted over the loudspeakers and Heath Ledger running all over the bleachers, singing. D'aww, who doesn't love a man who's willing to look a little silly for love?

The film: Beauty and the Beast

The gift: A library

If the lady in your life is a bookworm, chances are this classic scene from Disney hasn't passed her by. Beast knows exactly what bookish Belle wants most in the world and he gives her his entire library just to make her happy. It just goes to show: it doesn't matter if you're a huge, monstrous beast, gestures from the heart will always win through!

The film: Pretty Woman

The gift: Conquering fear

Just before the credits roll on Pretty Woman we get to see Richard Gere's character, Edward, scale a fire escape to give Julia Roberts a bunch of roses. But, lovely though they are, the flowers aren't the grand gesture here: Edward is terrified of heights and his willingness to ignore his fear just to get to the woman he loves is enough to make any girl swoon.

The film: The Wedding Singer

The gift: In-flight music

You probably wouldn't get away with this now, but in the 90s the finale of The Wedding Singer was certainly something to dream about whilst you were wedged between two strangers on a plane. Adam Sandler buys a first class ticket to get on the same plane as Drew Barrymore, then woos her in-flight with a spontaneous performance and the help of Billy Idol. Not bad at all!

The film: A Walk to Remember

The gift: Her bucket list

She's the high school nerd, he's one of the cool kids and they're forced to rehearse a play together: it's a tale as old as time and you know love is on the cards. But when he discovers that she is dying from leukemia, he helps her finish everything on her bucket list, including marrying her in the same church where her parents tied the knot. Are you weeping yet?

The film: A Knight's Tale

The gift: His pride

Heath Ledger - the ultimate romantic lead - makes this list for a second time with another grand gesture. Winning a jousting tournament for your lady love is no big deal in the world of medieval courtship, but when William's lover asks him to lose the tournament for her, he learns that sometimes love can be more powerful than pride. And pain too, apparently.

The film: The Notebook

The gift: Her dream home

Allie and Noah have a summer romance in an abandoned house, which  ends sadly when the young couple are forced apart first by stuck-up parents and then by World War II. But years later, Noah keeps his promise to buy and renovate the house for Allie. And whilst the house is his first gift of love to her, his second is sticking by her even as her dementia starts to take hold. Ladies, it's another tear-jerker!

The film: Say Anything

The gift: A musical declaration

"I love you so much I want to shout it from the rooftops" doesn't have to be just a turn of phrase. In Say Anything, John Cusack makes his love public by standing under his lady love's window and holding up his ghetto blaster, so she'll wake up to the beautiful strains of Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes. Very 80s, very awesome.
