The heart of any office is, without a doubt, the desk, and keeping it neat will certainly help you to stay organised. Of course, we all know what a feat it is to maintain a tidy desk, but desk tidies and pencil boxes are simple and decorative ways to keep all your stationery in order, leaving you with a clear space for working.

Since we’re talking tidiness, there are plenty of other ways to stay organised and avoid the dreaded clutter-creep. With a little planning it’s easy to stay on top of your paperwork: put all those urgent letters and bills in a paper in-tray so you know exactly what you still have to do and, once they’re dealt with, file them away safely in box files. It’s essential to stock up on all those other bits and pieces that come hand in hand with having an office, from staples and blu-tack to paper clips and treasury tags, and store them all in a set of mini drawers. Don’t forget to label the drawers, so you can easily find exactly what you need.

Now that you have the basics, you can start accessorising! It’s crucial to have a good chair to sit on when you’re working, so invest in a really good office chair. Or, if you’re on a tight budget, use a cushion to add a little extra comfort to any seat. It’s also important not to lose track of time! Make sure you use your office time effectively with the help of a wall clock, and even hang up a sign on the door to warn everyone that you’re not to be disturbed.

If you don’t have a whole room to dedicate to an office, then just a corner of the house will do. Wall tidies are a great way to hold everything you need for a mini office - such as pens, pencils and paper - and a few office trunks can be used for storing all those important documents, anywhere that you have space. Of course, we all know that offices around the country are powered by tea, so you can turn anywhere into a workspace with a thermos flask full of the good stuff.
