If you've ever dreamed of having a classic retro kitchen straight out of the 1950s, then we have some design tips for you. Here's how to get the retro look at home and make your kitchen the prettiest in the neighbourhood!

Cool colours

There are two ways to go with colour in a retro kitchen. First, there are the ever-popular pastels - you can mix and match to your heart's desire with whichever shades take your fancy, but pale pink and baby blue are the most iconic colours.

The second option is to use bold colours. Go for a pale backdrop, such as white tiles or cream walls, and use striking accent colours like red or blue to make a statement on your cupboard doors, storage containers or even kitchen scales!

Mismatched patterns

Understated is not the word for a vintage kitchen, so don't be afraid to make use of those strong patterns you've always loved. From checkerboard floors to floral wallpaper, prints and patterns should be the focal point of your room.

Mismatching is also a great way to get the vintage look. You can mix and match your favourite designs, putting patterned lino alongside handpainted bowls and mismatched crockery - it's all about eclectic collections!

Open shelving

Vintage storage is all about display. Think antique dressers, hooks for hanging up your mugs, and spice jars laid out on the counter tops. Everything in a vintage kitchen is something to be admired, so show it off with pride!

Of course, all this open storage is a great excuse to get some awesome retro crockery. Vintage plates, bowls, jugs and teapots look especially beautiful, so get out your best china and put it on display.

Traditional equipment

Modern gadgets are great, but sometimes you can't beat traditional kitchen utensils. Get your hands on ceramic mixing bowls, mason jars for storage and cute measuring cups.

It's easy to put a vintage twist on modern luxuries. Instead of chairs, think chrome bar stools. Instead of electronic scales, go for mechanical ones or even scales with a set of weights. It's all about balancing practicality with prettiness!

You can add the finishing touches to your kitchen with lots of beautiful storage! Don't keep cardboard boxes and packets hanging around - instead dispense all your cereal, pasta and rice into cool metal containers and mason jars.

Finally, the best part of any vintage kitchen has to be the spice rack. Get yourself some pre-labelled tins for your favourite spices, or handwrite the labels yourself, just like Mum used to do!
